Strategic Planner

SHIFT Active Media is an award-winning cycling media agency and works alongside some of the biggest, most high profile brands in the cycling world. As the SHIFT Strategic Planner you will work across SHIFT Active Media to develop brand and communications strategies and design innovative solutions.

Role purpose and responsibilities

You will work across SHIFT Active Media to develop brand and communications strategies and design innovative solutions, tools and campaigns to support a variety of challenges across our varied clients within the cycling industry.

Outside of your core outputs, you will also take responsibility for ensuring that all of SHIFT’s outputs for your clients are delivered against a strategic plan (and therefore contribute to business and marketing goals), are creatively brilliant, and are effective and achievable within their budgets.

The role will require you to:

  • Develop new strategies and plans that connect and build strong affinity with consumers.

  • Build a strong day-to-day relationship with key clients and internal stakeholders, enabling you to review, challenge and build on client briefs.

  • Articulate key insights, barriers, opportunities and propositions using information from various sources to inform your recommendations (e.g. subject matter experts, research docs, results, competitor activity, Google Analytics, insight reports).

  • Develop recommendations across a range of online, offline and emerging channels, and distil your ideas and thoughts into well-articulated plans with a clear rationale.

  • Take an active role in directing the development of new creative and media plans, writing and delivering creative and media briefs to get the best from both internal and external teams

  • Determine the evaluation requirements and produce or lead analysis for the campaigns and properties you are working on.

Essential skills and competencies

  • Marketing know-how: You embrace the opportunities presented by digital, social and mobile channels as well as have a strong understanding of more traditional channels, with a good grasp of how consumers use them, how they work and what’s possible.

  • Brand understanding: You’re confident getting under the skin of a brand and understanding its consumers; you will be able to articulate what the brand’s tone of voice, target audience, and positioning are and be able to offer up ideas that strengthen the brand positioning in the minds of the consumer.

  • Strategic thinker: You’re capable of thinking beyond the obvious. You can develop and articulate what the strategy is for any piece of work. But you can also develop pragmatic, actionable plans and support the implementation and tracking of projects.  You constantly question the status quo and seek new ways of doing things better.

  • Creativity and articulation: You have an ability to grasp and articulate consumer insights and develop compelling propositions. You enjoy evaluating and providing feedback on creative ideas and concepts.

  • Written and presentation skills: You’re able to produce well-crafted, well laid-out presentations and documents and present these confidently and engagingly. You can communicate complex things in a simple way.

  • Numerical and analytical skills: You’re not fazed by figures or data, are happy working in spreadsheets, and can present complex numbers in a simple way.

  • Reliability: With lots going on, you’re organised and focused enough to manage your own time; you take responsibility for getting things done and can be relied upon to do things within given timescales.

Preferred experience

  • Experience of working in a strategic or planning role within an agency or a client-side marketing team.

  • You will have spent a number of years specifically developing marketing and/or communication strategies and plans.

  • You will have experience working with well-known brands and can demonstrate how your ideas have made a tangible difference to campaign or business performance.

  • An interest or passion for cycling would be strongly desirable but not essential.
